The 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS STM shows very good sharpness at 18mm wide-open at ƒ/3.5, a focal length/aperture combination which typically shows off the weakness of most consumer-grade lenses.
As a general rule, the faster a lens is, the higher the quality (and price). There are certainly exceptions to this 'rule', but it is usually the case that for a given aperture setting, the faster lens will be sharper. For example, shooting at f/4 with your 18-55mm (set to 35mm) and at f/4 with the Nikon 35mm, the 35mm will produce a better image.
One of the things that’s great about the 18-55mm kit lens, is that it is an inexpensive way to get started in photography without costing you too much. You can typically find the kit lens sitting in at around the $200 price point at a local retailer, or take a look at Amazon with secure shipping.

The standard lens on most DSLRs is an 18-55mm lens. 18-55mm refers to the focal length of the lens, which means that when it’s zoomed all the way out, the lens will be at 18mm, which is considered wide angle. The focal length of a point-and-shoot camera or camera phone varies, but many of them are around 28-30mm.

Several of Nikon’s DSLRs can be purchased in a bundle with a 18-55mm kit lens. Its formal designation is the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR. This is one of Nikon’s entry-level lenses. It’s inexpensive, small and light, and versatile and makes for a good everyday starter lens. If you’re looking to invest in your lens collection . 75 57 190 48 154 266 42 87
